This data set is produced specifically for the health authorities, primary care groups and local authorities of the West Midlands health region. It is a joint production of the University of Birmingham Department of Public Health and Epidemiology and the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit, both participants in the West Midlands Public Health Observatory. It is hoped that this data set will be an important contribution to the Observatory's portfolio.

The philosophy behind the data set is the production of reliable health and health care information for health care planning and for the wider planning of public sector activities which impinge on health. We have tried to provide locally relevant information at a useful level of disaggregation.

A prime focus of the data set is on health and health care inequalities. It examines different representations of deprivation and maps, some of the responses to health and health care deprivation in the wider West Midlands. It also picks out ethnicity as a special topic (as well as topics on environmental health, health related behaviour in young people, accidents, cancers, dental health, communicable disease and coronary heart disease). In addition the scale of our attention is principally at primary care group level, around which much health and health care planning is bound to take place.
