9.1 Introduction

Key Health Data 2000 discussed the effects of crime on health and the role of the different agencies (including Health Authorities) in responding (Department of Public Health and Epidemiology, 2001). We were only able to obtain data by Police beat (the smallest administrative unit used by the Police typically covering around 5,000 people) for Warwickshire Police Service and this year we have been able to provide maps of six crime categories (total crime and disorder, burglaries, drug crime, thefts and violent crime) per 1000 people by ward for the West Midlands metropolitan authorities (see Figures 9.1 to 9.6) and hope to progressively map the rest of the region in subsequent editions.
