CHAPTER FOUR: New Deal For Communities, a Look at Economic Activity

4.1. Introduction

The NDC programme is a regeneration initiative and is a component of the National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal (NSNR) The programme started in 1998.and since then has aimed to improve local socio-economic and physical environments through intensive regeneration of disadvantaged communities. New Deal aims to do this by putting those communities at the heart of the decision making process and giving them the resources to tackle their problems in an intensive and co-ordinated way (http://www.odpm.gov.uk/stellent/groups/odpm_urbanpolicy/documents/page/odpm_urbpol_608419.hcsp)

There are 39 NDC areas in England. Six of these areas are situated in the West Midlands. The West Midlands Health Impact Assessment Research Unit based at the University of Birmingham are undertaking a 5 year evaluation of the health impacts of NDC.

This Chapter presents employment at Output Area level within each of the 6 West Midlands NDC areas. Census 2001 data on economic activity was obtained at output area level. Output areas in each NDC were identified and data for these OAs were selected from Table KS09AN (Census 2001). Table 4.1 shows economic activity data for all 6 NDCs along with West Midlands and England for comparison. Figures 4.1 – 4.7 show the pattern of employment (% working) in each of the NDC areas.
