Improving our health by translating research evidence into local NHS practice

PROGRAMME Management

Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care for Birmingham and Black Country (CLAHRC BBC) is funded by the National Institute for Research and Health (NIHR) and by matched funds provided by NHS partners. We are a five year research programme which brings together the University of Birmingham and over eleven NHS organisations in the Birmingham and Black Country region.

The programme is managed through the Birmingham Clinical Research Academy (BCRA), which aims to ensure evidence through research is translated to the patient bedside.

There are three levels of management groups in our programme, outlined below - all of which are overseen by the CLAHRC BBC Director Professor Richard Lilford and the Programme Manager, Miss Nathalie Maillard.

Theme Management Groups (TMGs)
The TMGs are responsible for the overall co-ordination and monitoring of each research Theme to ensure progress towards successful delivery of research objectives. Each TMG meets at least four times a year and reports to the PMC (outlined below) on a monthly basis. The administrators working for each Theme are supported by a Project Management Group, co-ordinated by the Programme Manger.

Programme Management Committee (PMC)
The aim of this group is to oversee the delivery of the whole programme and to optimise intergration and synergy between themes. As well as financial monitoring of the programme the PMC play an important role in reviewing and appraising the research proposals that are developed within each theme. The PMC convenes each month and comprises Theme Leaders, lead researchers and financial and operational personnel.

Programme Steering Committee (PSC)
The PSC has a responsibility to report on the progress of the programme to the NIHR as well as providing strategic advice on the overall management of the research programmes, financial monitoring and the conduct of external relations and dissemination of results.

The chain of management bodies from the TMG through PMC to PSC ensures good practice for research management and governance and financial monitoring and planning. Any project or programme issues that may arise will be communicated and discussed by the appropriate level in our management structure.
